Lucas Cesário (Brazilian, b.1994) presents three of his portraits from the suburb of Realengo, just West of Rio de Janeiro, where he was born and raised. Focusing on aesthetic elements from the periphery of Rio de Janeiro, his work reclaims traditions, lucky or protective charms, investigating the marginalization of Rio’s territories. Cesário works to capture the energy of the youth rebelling against oppressive sociological systems by producing alternative images for Black and marginalized bodies. Cesário is interested in the syncretism between popular and subcultures. His aesthetic experiments construct alternative narratives, purifying the image attributed and perpetuated to Brazilians by colonizers.

Cesário is a photographer and film student at Universidade Federal Fluminense. His work is most influenced by fashion photography - it is within this genre, that the cultural impact of representation and visibility is most perceptible. Cesário’s expressionist images are in dialogue with academic, professional and ecological references.
