Mahal attempts to perform a dramatic, emotional number by Arca but is interrupted by her phone at the most inopportune moments. I was thinking about how technology can thwart our relationship with the present––it's like whiplash cutting between online and IRL worlds––and the ways we adjust our behaviors and emotions for social media. I was definitely not thinking about the time a heckler once said to me during a performance: "OK we get it, you're sad."
